Recently, sanctions have been levied against the Kenora Catholic District School Board’s St. Thomas Aquinas High School and the Junior Boys’ Basketball team by the Northwestern Ontario Secondary Schools Athletic Association (NORWOSSA).  The sanctions are in response to what NORWOSSA has determined to be recruiting violations by St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Kenora.

At a regular semiannual NORWOSSA meeting on November 17, 2014, a motion was passed following a report by a NORWOSSA member principal that detailed what was believed to be the use of specific recruitment tactics for the purposes of athletics by a coach at St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Kenora.  The motion, which directed the NORWOSSA executive to investigate the alleged recruiting violation, was passed unanimously by all member school representatives.

An initial investigation was conducted through e mail to gather preliminary information from both parties.  The executive requested face to face interviews with those involved in the investigation to be held on Monday December 3rd.   St. Thomas Aquinas declined the verbal interviews so the executive continued with e mail correspondence.  A special meeting was called on December 3, 2014 to deliberate the findings of the NORWOSSA executive’s investigation.  A presentation of the collected information occurred which was followed by a question and answer period.  Motions were put forward by member school representatives following the presentation and a vote was held involving all member schools.  Three of the motions involving sanctions passed with a vote count of 10-1.  One motion involving sanctions passed with a vote count of 9-2.

Member schools (listed alphabetically) of NORWOSSA include Atikokan High School, Bai Bom Anishinabe High School, Beaver Brae Secondary School, Dryden High School, Fort Frances High School, Ignace High School, Pelican Falls First Nations High School, Queen Elizabeth District High School, Rainy River High School, Red Lake District High School, and St. Thomas Aquinas High School.

Michael Lalonde, President of NORWOSSA, stated “As an organizing body of high schools athletics for 25+ years, the members and the executive collectively make many decisions about eligibility, promoting fair play, and implementing a common code of ethics for all members.  Decisions like these are never easy for any organization, especially when they involve students, but we have a responsibility to ensure fair play for all and we conclude that these sanctions are warranted.  Unfortunately, this is the second such incident of what the league determined to be recruitment violations by St. Thomas Aquinas, as laid out by OFSAA’s recruiting statement of principle, and it did result in substantial sanctions.  We are an organization about student/athletes and the integrity of sport and while we regret having to make these decisions, we believe they were necessary.  The junior boys’ basketball team will continue to participate in league play and as a valued member of our organization we look forward to their full participation in NorWOSSA next year.”

Sincerely,

Mike Lalonde

NorWossa President
